While mainland Japan is still scorching hot, temperatures are starting to cool in Niseko as the footsteps of Autumn draw near.
Niseko’s autumn has a magic of its own, thanks to its otherworldly autumn foliage, with leaves changing bright red and yellow.
If we’ve piqued your interest and you want to visit Niseko in the autumn, here’s a short guide to the foliage and all the other things you can do during this beautiful season.
Autumn Foliage in Niseko generally occurs between the end of September and the end of October, though it varies from year to year.
The timing of the colour change also differs depending on the location and altitude.
While it’s difficult to predict exactly when the peak colour change will occur, we’ve listed a few amazing locations to check out foliage, organised based on observations from past years.
A natural pond hidden in the woods, the Kagami Numa Wetland Marsh is one of the most popular destinations for viewing the autumn foliage in Niseko. Starting from around the end of September, the foliage can usually be enjoyed until the middle of October.
The Panorama Line is the best driving route in Niseko for enjoying the autumn leaves. A winding road into the mountains, it allows you to experience the grand beauty of nature from your car. The foliage is usually at its peak until early October.
The gondola, used for skiing in the winter, takes us to the top of Mt. Niseko Annupuri and offers breathtaking panoramic views of the entire Niseko area, showcasing the autumn colours. The best views are typically seen from early to mid-October.
A beginner-friendly mountain to climb, Mt. Niseko Annupuri offers immersive views of the changing colours both during the ascent and from the summit. The best time to visit is usually from early to mid-October.

Here’s a list of things you can enjoy when you come in Autumn
Autumn is harvest time, and some of Niseko’s specialties – potatoes and rice – begin to fill the markets. For fresh produce, visit View Plaza located in Niseko Town, where you’ll find a wide selection of goods straight from the farmers. Try cooking with these seasonal vegetables and you’ll be surprised at how different they taste compared to out-of-season produce from your usual supermarkets.
Fruit picking is another delightful way to enjoy fresh produce. Just an hour’s drive from Niseko, Yoichi Town has many fruit gardens with picking activities available until October. Seasonal fruits like apples, grapes, prunes, pears and more can be enjoyed during this time.
From the beginning to the end of September, a huge food festival takes place in Sapporo, featuring stall after stall of every type of food imaginable, from ramen to baked goods. For food lovers, this is a great stop to make on your way to Niseko.
With chilly temperatures in Niseko, it’s the perfect season to start dipping in warm hot springs and rejuvenate yourself. There are multiple onsens in Niseko to choose from, including some located in the mountains where you can also enjoy the autumn foliage, such as Goshiki Onsen and Yukichichibu Onsen.
Niseko offers a whole range of outdoor activities, from golf and mountain biking to rafting and more. Add these activities in your itinerary, and you’re sure to have a memorable experience with your family or friends. What’s even better is that you’ll get to enjoy these activities with the autumn foliage as your backdrop!
